Artist, Author and Producer, Of Service

Jenani Therone is a Melbourne-based artist, author, and fine art photographer whose unique journey bridges the realms of healthcare and the arts. With over a decade of experience in community health, Jenani’s transition to photography was a deeply personal evolution that enriches her creative perspective. Her background in healthcare profoundly influences her work, instilling a deep understanding of vulnerability, resilience, and healing that forms the cornerstone of her artistic practice.

Guided by the belief that art is both a selfish and selfless act—a courageous choice to reveal the rawest fragments of humanity for a higher purpose—Jenani’s photography captures stories of hope, struggle, and survival. Her work invites viewers to connect with the human experience on a profound level, resonating deeply with the philosophy of Annette Messager:

“Art is about healing while also daring to show our wounds.”

Jenani’s artistic journey began with works like Land is Family, a fine art publication exploring the emotional connection between land and an Australian farming family. Her most defining project to date, Of Service, captures the stories of over 100 Australian veterans as they navigate life after military service. This work is both a tribute to their sacrifices and an exploration of the mental and emotional challenges they face, underscoring Jenani’s commitment to contributing to their healing.

Through exhibitions at venues such as Tacit Art in Melbourne and recognition in awards including the Pink Lady Photographer of the Year Awards and Head On Photo Awards International, Jenani has established herself as an accomplished artist. Her work transcends aesthetics, urging viewers to find reflections of shared humanity within each image.

Of Service represents the culmination of Jenani’s dedication to using art as a means of connection, healing, and impact—not only for veterans but for the broader community.

I am privileged, honoured, and humbled to be in a position to personally witness what 'Of Service' means to some and how it has already made a positive impact on them. 'Of Service' continues to surprise and humble me in ways I never anticipated.
